What is a Virtual Harmonium?

The Indian Harmonium is a cornerstone of South Asian music, prominently featured in Hindustani classical, Gurmat Sangeet, Qawwali, and light vocal performances. Our virtual harmonium online simulator brings the soul of the traditional pump organ straight to your web browser.

Built entirely on modern web technologies, it requires no software installations or MIDI setups. Simply open the page and use your standard QWERTY computer keyboard to play polyphonic melodies and rich chords instantly.

Powerful Capabilities

Zero-Latency Polyphony

Play up to 10 keys simultaneously. Perfect for complex ragas, fast chord changes, and professional performance practice.

Multi-Reed Acoustic Synthesis

Our audio engine mathematically synthesizes detuned brass reeds, creating a warm, chorusing organ tone instead of cheap digital beeps.

Instant Scale Transposition

Shift the pitch of the entire keyboard up or down in semitones to perfectly match your vocal range without re-learning fingerings.

Cross-Platform Responsive

Works elegantly on Desktop PC keyboards or mobile touch screens. Take your instrument with you wherever you go.

Computer Keyboard Mapping (QWERTY)

This simulator flawlessly maps your standard computer keyboard to the musical keys.

White Keys (Lower Row)

Maps to the primary lower octave.

Black Keys (Upper Row)

Maps to the sharp/flat notes.

SDGHJ
Upper Octave White Keys

Virtual Instrument FAQs

Common questions about playing our browser-based harmonium simulator.

Do I need a MIDI keyboard to use this?

No! This is designed to be played immediately using your laptop keyboard or a mobile touchscreen. While MIDI support may be added in the future, the primary goal is accessibility.

Why do notes cut off smoothly instead of clicking?

We've implemented a programmatic 'release envelope.' When you lift your finger off a key or release a mouse button, the audio engine gently fades the volume out over a few milliseconds, preventing the harsh digital 'clicks' that plague lower-quality simulators.

Can I use this for Sargam Riyaz?

Absolutely. However, if you are focusing specifically on vocal training, we highly recommend visiting our dedicated Sargam Practice suite, which includes a visual pitch detection module and a rhythmic metronome to assist your singing.

Does this virtual harmonium support polyphony?

Yes, it fully supports polyphony. You can press multiple computer keys simultaneously to play complex chords, making it perfect for both melody lines and harmonic accompaniments.

How does the sound engine work?

Unlike simple sample-players, our audio engine mathematically synthesizes the sound using the Web Audio API. It fires multiple detuned oscillators simultaneously and routes them through acoustic filters to mimic the breathing, organic resonance of physical brass reeds.

What does the Transpose feature do?

Transpose shifts the entire pitch of the keyboard up or down in semitones. If your vocal range is a 'C#' but you want to play using the visual 'C' keys, you can set the Transpose to +1. The visual keys remain identical, but the sound matches your voice.
